George Maponga in Mwenezi
The community in Joseph Village, located in the Negari communal lands of Mwenezi, has successfully implemented President Mnangagwa’s initiative, “Nyika Inovakwa Nevene Vayo,” by pooling resources to construct a modern school in the rural heartland.
Under the auspices of the Joseph Institute of Development (JID) and inspired by Econet chief executive officer, Dr Douglas Mboweni, and his wife, Mrs Sarudzayi Mboweni, the community has built Rixile Primary School — an exemplary educational facility that boasts amenities that rival those found in urban schools.
Rixile, which means dawn in the local Shangaan language, currently enrols 80 early childhood development (ECD) and Grade 1 learners from Joseph and nearby areas.
The school has wi-fi, running water, modern toilets, and computers, providing students with essential resources for learning.
Dr Mboweni, who comes from Joseph Village, emphasised the community’s ownership of Rixile Primary. “The school belongs to the Joseph community and is run under JID. I am just one of the villagers who pooled resources to realise this dream.”
He expressed a vision for the future, hoping to expand Rixile into a secondary school and potentially a university, highlighting education as a transformative tool for future generations.
Mrs Mboweni acknowledged the importance of making a positive impact on the lives of others and praised her husband for his faith and dedication to community development.
Village head, Mr Fanuel Mboweni, paid tribute to the Mbowenis for founding JID.
“We want to thank them for the idea that has resulted in the achievements we see today, echoing President Mnangagwa’s mantra. This project is owned by the Joseph community.”
Mwenezi District Education Inspector, Mr Shepherd Mapara, commended the community for establishing Rixile Primary School, which significantly reduces travel distances for learners.
Previously, some learners had to walk up to 5 km to reach school and plans are underway to register Rixile as an independent institution next year.
Mwenezi District Coordinator under the Public Service Commission, Mr Last Gondo, noted that the initiative aligns with President Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, which aims for an empowered upper-middle-income society in Zimbabwe by 2030.
Mwenezi District Development Coordinator Mr Isaac Mutambara, called the development a landmark achievement, and encouraged other communities to emulate the spirit of collaboration demonstrated in Joseph Village.
“This initiative should inspire others to lead in developing their localities. The entire nation can learn from Mwenezi.”
Other speakers at the event celebrated the community’s initiative, reflecting on how sanctions have motivated Zimbabweans to take charge of their development.
