Norton Town Council today held its 2027 pre-budget consultative meeting with residents’ associations and property developers, with residents highlighting roads, sewer reticulation, water and social amenities as key priorities.
Residents of Maridale proposed the establishment of a council office to serve Maridale and Marshlands.
They also called for sewer reticulation, marketplaces, improved roads and the construction of a secondary school in Maridale.
Residents of Knowe prioritised road improvements and the establishment of a shopping centre, while those in Katanga Industrial Park called for public toilets, plastic bins, water and sewer boreholes and tower lights.
The town engineer told the meeting that council had been engaging residents of Knowe Phase 2 on possible collaboration to improve roads in the area.
The discussions resulted in residents agreeing to contribute towards the road works, while council would provide the required equipment.
The arrangement is expected to help address concerns raised by Knowe residents over the poor state of roads in the area.
He also told the meeting that the developer of Knowe Phase 3 was applying for a permit to commence development.
“The issue of the permit will be heard in council when committees sit and once approved, they start developing in Knowe Phase 3,” he said.
He said council has issued the developer with a permit to develop Knowe Phase 1 commercial centre.
“Council monitors how the developer develops the commercial centre ie roads and water. The commercial centre is expected to have markets and public toilets to service residents of Knowe. So we are waiting for him to start.”
