A driver employed by a local company has been sentenced to community service after he was found guilty of forging receipts and stealing US$4 323 from the money he was supposed to hand over to his employer, Orange Health.

Nyasha Gudyanga (31) was convicted at his own plea of guilty when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Yeukai Dzuda charged with fraud.

Initially, Mrs Dzuda sentenced him to 24 months in prison. Six months were suspended on the condition of future good behaviour, and eight months were suspended on condition that he pays back the US$4 323 by June 19.

The remaining 10 months were converted into community service to be performed at Glen Norah Satellite Clinic.

The complainant in this matter is Orange Health represented by its warehouse manager Mr Charles Sifeku.

Prosecuting, Mr Bornfree Musvairi told the court that on May 3 at Orange Health in Bluff Hill Industrial Park, the administration manager was doing a follow-up on one of the customer’s accounts to establish why he was not making his payments in full. This is when it was discovered that the customer’s receipt was different from the company’s receipt which was originated by Gudyanga on the same date and time.

Gudyanga gave the customer the receipt with the actual amount he had paid and altered the company receipt by showing the customer had paid less and taking the balance.

Investigations into the matter revealed that Gudyanga would remove the back pages of the receipt book and give it to the customers and when submitting to the company he would then write on the correct receipt a lesser amount than the one paid by the customer and steal the difference.

He faked the payments on several occasions thereby causing financial prejudice to the company of US$ 4 323.

The matter was reported to the police leading to his arrest.
