Community service for Hwange stealing maid

A 19-YEAR-OLD woman who was employed as a maid in Hwange, Matabeleland North province has been slapped with 30 months’ imprisonment after she stole clothes and an iPad worth US$1 455 from her employer.

Previous Manhari recently appeared before a Hwange Magistrate facing a charge of theft. She pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced.

Four months of her sentence was suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour and a further eight months was suspended on condition that she pays restitution.

The remaining 18 months were suspended on condition that she performs 630 hours of community service. The court heard that on 31 May 2024, in the absence of her employer, Manhari stole clothes, perfumes, and an iPad worth US$1 455 from the victim’s bedroom, packed them into suitcases, and left.

The victim reported the matter to the police and investigations led to the arrest of Manhari in Nyanga and the recovery of property worth US$895.
