Community speaks on serial killer arrest

Guruve residents still wait in bated breath to see if arrested suspect Anymore Zvitsva will clear all murder cases he is accused off.

Zvitsva, who was on the run since October, was arrested on Saturday afternoon after being dramatically cornered by a mob of villagers and youths in his father’s garden on the outskirts of his village in Ruvinga, about 12km south west of Guruve Centre.

Security forces shot and broke his left leg before airlifting him to Bindura Provincial Hospital for treatment under guard.

There was cheering, ululation and general celebrations by mostly villagers, who had spent sleepless nights in fear of his alleged escapades.

But soon after the heat-of-moment celebrations, questions were raised about Zvitsva being a lone killer, after videos of him acknowledging only five out of the 12 murders, started circulating on social media.

The videos were mainly from his moment of arrest and police interrogations in hospital.

Zvitsva who appeared unfazed in the videos after his arrest, intermittently mixed narratives of his killing process and laughter, and that made villagers rethink.

“I only killed those five, that is my aunt’s family. Those are the only five people I killed.

“I was alone and I did not kill anyone else”, he said. He denied raping any women.

While that could be his defence tactic, villagers want to see him clear all murder, rape and attempted rape cases.

What has made his case more complicated is that a spitting distance from where Zvitsva, by his admission upon arrest, killed his aunt and four other people, village head John Chimana Chaora was killed and police have since accounted for five relatives.

Chaora (54) of Kazunga Village — who was poised to be installed as chief — was strangled to death in a conspiracy allegedly orchestrated by a close relative coveting the chieftainship.

Police have since arrested Kelvin Katuruza Chaora (26), a 16-year-old juvenile, Chemika Gwenzi (33), Bvumbe Mandeya (35) and Ranwes Chaora (58) in connection with the killing on December 28 2025.

This brings into play, reasonable suspicion by villagers that, if Zvitsva does not clear these other cases, some murderers might have been taking advantage of his spree.

Of course police know how best to professionally investigate and link or de-link him from the rest of the murders.

But for now villagers are very cautious.
