TWO commuter omnibus conductors have been arrested for allegedly murdering a passenger following a misunderstanding over bus fare in Lower Gweru.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the murder which occurred on Friday at around 8 pm.
“I can confirm a case of murder where a 31-year-old man died on the spot after being attacked by two men who had offered him a lift in their car,” he said.
“The incident occurred in Ndabambe Village, Lower Gweru, on September 13 at around 8 pm.”
Inspector Mahoko said it is alleged that Qalisani Tshuma (31) and his friend Thabo Sibanda (27) were cycling home from Masefa Business Centre.
He said the duo saw an Iveco Sprinter that was travelling from Bulawayo to Kwekwe and asked for a lift.
“They put their bicycles and luggage in the trailer. Upon reaching their destination, the two stopped the motor vehicle and offloaded their bicycles and luggage,” said Inspector Mahoko.
However, a misunderstanding arose between the duo and the conductors over bus fare, resulting in a fierce fight.
The conductors, Romeo Sezydekure (38) and Mayibongwe Maphosa (23) struck Tshuma with a shovel and stabbed him with a knife before fleeing in their vehicle, leaving Tshuma bleeding profusely.
“Tshuma succumbed to the injuries and died on the spot,” he said.
“The suspects were later arrested and the matter is still under investigation. We urge members of the public to desist from moving around with dangerous weapons. Resolve disputes without resorting to violence.”
