Zenzo Moyo
FOR the past five years, no one can be proud of what he/she has done with football money alone. In the years gone by, I would budget with a winning bonus to buy a bed, the next win I would buy a stove, but now it’s not possible as the environment is not conducive.
Let’s go back and have situations where players are employed and take other basic skills of survival. Clubs can also engage sponsors in employing players. At one time Aram Tshuma, Simon Sibanda and others were employed by Red Seal. Thabani Masawi, Dazzy Kapenya, Golding Dube were once employed by Hunyani Corrugated and Sikhumbuzo Ndebele worked at Dunlop.
The advantage of this is to develop role models for the society who will walk with pride after their playing days. Company owned teams should come on board and employ players. This will come as a cushion for the player who will want to hand his/her boots or when an injury forced them into retirement.
It comes as an added advantage to the ageing players to leave for the younger generation to play hence creating job opportunities for youngsters. The player must not cling to football because of financial gain and end up embarrassing the beautiful game.
The mother body must have an after playing fund for players, taking into account the number of years played and package.
Till next week, I will be telling it without fear or favour. Stay Blessed.
