A day I will never forget.
I will never forget the 15th of March 2023. I had just started working as a shop assistant Bulawayo.
My salary was very small, but I was proud I could finally help my parents. That morning, while I was at work, I received a painful phone call.
My younger sister called me crying, “Baba has collapsed, come home!” I rushed home and found our house full of mourners. My father was lying on the floor covered with a white sheet. He had died of a stroke. I knelt beside him and could not believe not believe that my hero was gone. My mother and sisters were wailing loudly. That moment is still fresh in my mind.
The next problem was money for the funeral because I had just started working. I did not have a stable income. I had only 45 dollars in my account. We had to rely on relatives and well-wishers. My uncle sent 50 dollars, my aunt sent 30 dollars and neighbours helped with food, in total we gathered about 400 dollars. We thought it was enough for a decent burial.
We made a big mistake by entrusting all the money to a close relative. Instead of buying a proper coffin, he misused the money. He bought beer for his friends and hired an expensive car. When we asked for receipts, he became angry. Within two days, most of the money was gone.
On the burial day, everything was pathetic. The coffin was changed from a good one to a very thin box. There was no tent and no food for mourners who had come from far. People sat in the hot sun.
