Compulsory speed limiters for all buses

BUS manufacturer Zhongtong has started fitting speed limiters on all buses in a bid to reduce road carnage.

According to Statutory Instrument 118 of 2023, public service vehicles must be fitted with a speed-limiting device to ensure speeds do not exceed 100km/h.

The move comes following an increase in bus accidents blamed on speeding.

Chinese bus manufacturer Zhongtong said that speed limits have been fitted to all of its new buses since last year, with all buses manufactured after July 2023 also coming with pre-installed speed limiters.

There are believed to be between 3 000 and 4 000 buses operating in Zimbabwe, both locally manufactured and imported.

“After July 2023 all buses coming have speed limiters, which limit the bus’ speed to between 100km/h and 110km/h being the maximum,” said a Zhongtong representative to Zimbabwe.

The speed limiters are installed permanently and can work for a lifetime if the drivers to not tamper with them.

Zhongtong said the speed limiters will complement the tracking system which is expensive and time-consuming monitoring.
