Computer teacher shortage hits Gwanda

COMPUTERS donated by President Mugabe are still lying idle in Gwanda District as there are no teachers to teach the subject.
This emerged during the Gwanda Rural District Council meeting on Friday where councillors expressed concern over the failure by some schools to teach computers.
Ward 15 Councillor Enock de Souza said:  “Some schools are failing to teach computers because they don’t have teachers for computer lessons. The computers donated by the President have not  been utilised and parents are really not happy about it.

“For example, pupils at Selonga High School are yet to conduct computer lessons. We appeal to responsible authorities to ensure that a solution to this challenge is found.”

The councillors said schools in rural areas should keep pace with modern technology like their urban counterparts.
“In this modern world our rural children should move with time,” said another councillor from the floor.

An official from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Job Ncube who attended the meeting admitted there was a shortage of computer teachers in the district.

“We are aware of the problem and we hope the Civil Service Commission (CSC) is attending to it,” he said.
Besides shortage of computer teachers, some schools have failed to use the donated computers because of electricity problems and absence of computer laboratories.

However, Ncube applauded some schools that had taken initiatives to make use of the computers outside government intervention.
“There are some schools such as Bethel High that were facing electricity challenges but have since acquired a generator so that they fully utilise the computers,” he said.

President Mugabe has over the years donated computers to both rural and urban schools in the country under the Presidential Computerisation Programme meant to promote E-Learning.
