Concession District Hospital is on the verge of collapse due to financial challenges that has seen it closing some of its units. The hospital is in a sorry state with patients now required to bring blankets from home on admission.
The health institution serves as a referral hospital for patients in areas around Mazowe.

It has closed its dental unit after its 15 year old dental machine broke down.

A dentist who had been stationed there for years has since left.

On Tuesday, Mazowe West legislator Cde Ray Kazembe toured the hospital to familiarise himself with the problems facing the institution.

“This hospital is not supposed to be treating minor ailments because it is a referral hospital but it is now being overwhelmed by patients because there are no clinics in the area,” a nurse said.

“The hospital has since shelved some of its projects because of lack of funds. Construction of a waiting house for pregnant women has been shelved owing to lack of funds.

“A laundry room project which has been under construction since 2011 has also not taken any shape.”

Cde Kazembe, who was born at the hospital, donated 55 blankets and urged the corporate world to chip in.

“When I heard the problems faced by the hospital I asked myself what I can do while we wait for Government and I decided to provide blankets for patients given that we are in winter

“It is also not feasible for patients to bring their own blankets,” he said.

Ms Fungai Mandaza, who had accompanied a relative at the hospital, said the donation was a welcome development given that patients were being asked to bring their own blankets. “When I brought my sick cousin on Monday we were told to bring our own blankets. This donation will go a long way in helping the institution,” she said.
