CONDOLENCE messages are pouring in to the family of the late Vice President John Landa Nkomo following the death of his mother Macitshi Dube Nkomo on Tuesday.
The matriarch who was affectionately referred to as Gogo MaDube died at the family home in Famona, Bulawayo at the age of 112. Her family said she died due to complications related to old age.
Her grandson, Jabulani Nkomo said the two Vice Presidents, Phelekezela Mphoko and Emmerson Mnangagwa, the President’s Office, Zanu-PF officials and a number of ministers as well as thousands of people had sent in their messages of condolences.
“As a family, we are much humbled by the condolence messages that are trickling in from all corners the country,” he said.
In a statement, the patron of the John Landa Nkomo Memorial Trust, Simon Khaya Moyo said the death of Gogo MaDube had thrown the Tsholotsho community into mourning.
“We have been robbed of a granary of knowledge, a fountain of wisdom and a beacon of hope. She gave us the late Vice President John Landa Nkomo, a visionary and a man of impeccable leadership qualities. As we still miss her son, so shall we miss her, for her legacy has enriched this nation. Her deeds live forever. We cherish her humility, her advice on all issues which advance humanity, her purposeful life and her solid character. She was also a woman of prayer. May her soul anchor and rest in rest in eternal peace. Hamba kahle Gogo wethu sonke. Lala ngokuthula MaDube. (Go well our grandmother. Rest in Peace),” he said.
Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affair Cain Mathema said the death of Gogo MaDube was a big loss to Tsholotsho and Zimbabwe.
“Gogo leaves behind so much history on her great works which include good grooming of children. Gogo is a heroine who knew life in and out and was a great advisor which I believe many will miss her for,” he said.
The Director General of South Africa, Department of Hospitality Industry, Nkhumeleni Tharage also sent a message of condolences.
Gogo MaDube is survived by six children, about 152 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mourners are gathered at the Nkomo family home at number 2 Clyde road in Famona. She is expected to be buried at her homestead in Bhule 1, Tsholotsho on Sunday.
