Life behind bars made ex-convict Onias Mawire (36) realise his talent in music. Mawire said he had never tried music until the challenging prison life saw him casually beginning to sing and later realising he was gifted in the art.
Mawire was arrested in 2002 for Car-jacking and armed robbery.
He left prison in 2009 and claims he is now a Christian in addition to recording his music.
He has released two new hip hop tracks “Kuchema Kwemabhanditi” and “Vanavangu Chigumbura”.
“In ‘Kuchema Kwemabhanditi’ I narrate the convicts’ dilemma. When a person commits a crime and is sentenced, their families distance themselves from them. Sadly, this is the critical time when the convict needs them most,” he said.
In the track he explains that when a person goes behind bars they immediately realise their mistakes in life and would be willing to make amends.
The musician goes on to give another account on his second track entitled “Vanavangu Chigumbura”.
“I simply clarify that when a convict is in prison, let the family members seriously consider taking care of his or her children. I was referring to myself as ‘Chigumbura’ in the track and saying my children did nothing wrong, hence must not suffer because of my mistakes.”
