THE construction of a new police base at Market Square in Kopje is expected to combat rising crime in the area.
This part of the capital has seen a significant increase in the number of people falling victim to fraud cases, particularly chadonha.
There has been concern over the surge in fraudsters pretending to offer job assistance or retail jobs.
The officer commanding Harare province, Commissioner Wonder Tembo, expressed concern over the increase in fraudsters, especially around the Gulf Complex.
The new base is designed to help deal with these criminal activities and ensure the safety of commuters at the bus terminus.
“The base is set to become a shelter and a shield for many from the turbulent winds of crime,” said Comm Tembo.
“It is, indeed, worthy of our celebration, given that it will serve one of the notorious and busiest areas of our central business district.
“It will be a relief to many, who often had to move some distances, to find police services.
“We deeply appreciate the role being played here by the ZRP Kopje Crime Liaison Committee in both resource mobilisation and fighting crime.
“I am charging all the officers and sundry deployed here to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of commuters at this bus terminus,” said Comm Tembo.
