Confusion over India series

INDIA’S tour of Zimbabwe scheduled for next month is in doubt although the hosts yesterday maintained high level talks are still taking place between the two cricket boards.

Reports from India yesterday indicated the former world champions had decided to scrap plans to tour Zimbabwe next month because of fatigue and disagreements with broadcasters, Ten Sports.

India were penciled to play three ODIs and two T20Is against the Zimbabweans from July 10 but there were unconfirmed reports the Indian board had decided to call off the series.

However, Zimbabwe Cricket’s director for Domestic and International Cricket, Alistair Campbell, yesterday said there was no official position on the cancellation of the tour as negotiations were taking place between the two cricket authorities.

Campbell said the association’s chairman Wilson Manase and managing director Wilfred Mukondiwa have scheduled meetings with the Board of Control for Cricket in India on the sidelines of the International Cricket Council annual conference which started in Barbados yesterday.

“We released a statement on Sunday and, as it stands, nothing has changed. The chairman is in Barbados, he landed this afternoon (yesterday) and these are some of the things they will be discussing with the Indian authorities on the sidelines of the ICC meeting.

“Of course, there are bits and pieces that needed to be agreed on before the tour and those things are being attended to and we will have a position on Wednesday (tomorrow) or Thursday,” said Campbell.

ZC published a statement at the weekend which acknowledged the challenges facing the tour and hinted on postponement to next year if the issues were not ironed out in time. The association, however, have not lost hope for the tour to go ahead this year.

The Zimbabwe national team is currently preparing for the tour under the guidance of Dav Whatmore while India have been involved in a series with Bangladesh.
