BULAWAYO residents have been urged to tackle the root causes of littering as the city continues to embrace the Government-led monthly National Clean-Up Campaign.
Held on the first Friday of every month at the initiative of President Mnangagwa, the campaign brings together Government ministries and departments, local authorities, churches, companies, schools and members of the public to promote environmental cleanliness.
Speaking while leading a clean-up exercise at the City Hall parking area and surrounding streets on Friday, Ms Nyarie Shoko said although the campaign had gained widespread support, greater emphasis should now be placed on changing people’s attitudes towards littering.
“The residents of Bulawayo, together with companies and churches, must be commended for fully embracing the clean-up campaigns that help keep our city clean. However, we must now focus on the root causes of littering, which is the unpleasant culture of throwing away litter.
“We can simply do the right thing by disposing of paper, plastic bottles and leftover food in refuse bins.
“Anti-littering starts with every one of us by ensuring that we hold onto our litter for a couple of metres until we find a refuse bin, which, by the way, can be found on almost every street corner in the city centre,” she said.
Ms Shoko’s team was joined by pupils from local colleges and members of the Bulawayo Fire Brigade during the clean-up exercise.
Similar clean-up activities were conducted at several locations across the city, including the Bulawayo Public Library, Unity Village, Sixth Avenue and Centenary Park, as organisations and residents participat
