Constitution must be Zim product: Chihuri

made the remarks in a speech read on his behalf by the Deputy Commissioner-General (human resources) Levy Sibanda to seven officers who recently returned from a United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.
“It is every genuine Zimbabwean’s understanding that the Constitution as the supreme law of the country must be a Zimbabwean product with Zimbabwean views not diluted or borrowed ideologies,” Comm-Gen Chihuri said.
Nine more police officers are expected to leave the country soon to the same country on a similar mission. Comm-Gen Chihuri urged the returning officers to swiftly adjust to the current affairs in the country.
“As you maybe aware, the country is in the process of finalising the process to the holding of general elections,” he said.
“These processes include the finalisation of the drafting of the new constitution, the holding of the referendum to validate the document and finally the holding of elections.”
Comm-Gen Chihuri said it was important to understand fully that in all these processes, the force’s mandate remained firm and undiluted.
“Moreover, the ZRP will never relent in its unconstitutionally assigned responsibility to bring misfits to account for their machinations,” he said.
Comm-Gen Chihuri said the officers on the peacekeeping mission were selected after a thorough, transparent and competitive process by the United Nations Selection Assistance Team (UNSAT) certified by the UN department of peacekeeping operations.
He said ZRP was proud to have selfless cadres committed to total universal peace, stability and progress. Comm-Gen Chihuri said he was humbled by the confidence, goodwill and respect expressed by nationals in countries police officers had been privileged to serve in peacekeeping operations.
He said it was pleasing to note that the UN cherishes the force’s proud and untainted professional record in international peace-making, peace-keeping and peace-building processes as evidenced by constant invitation to participate in various missions.
Comm-Gen Chihuri urged officers to remain steadfast, maintain their identity and uphold national ethos.
