LONDON — Chelsea manager Antonio Conte’s future at Stamford Bridge was thrown into doubt last night as the English champions slumped to a 1-4 defeat to Watford in a league match at Vicarage Road.
The Italian has been under severe pressure and last night’s hammering could see him being sacked after a season in which the Blues have struggled.
They lost Tiemoue Bakayoko to a second bookable offence in the first half and trailed at the interval to a penalty converted by Troy Deeney after the outstanding Gerard Deulofeu was brought down by the goalkeeper.
Eden Hazard then struck a late superb equaliser and hopes were raised the champions could stage a comeback win, but the hosts refused to be drowned and some good goals from Deulofeu, Daryl Janmaat and Roberto Pereyra powered them to a big victory.
It’s the first time that Chelsea have conceded four goals against a team below the top 6 of the English Premiership table since 2007.
Watford were full value for their victory which is set to pile more pressure on Conte who has looked, in recent days, like a man resigned to the inevitable sack.
Most of the Chelsea players had a stinker of a game and they got what they deserved on the night.
