Construction of the Bulawayo-Kezi-Maphisa and Gwanda-Maphisa roads is progressing steadily, with Government working to ensure the timely release of funds to support the completion of the strategic infrastructure projects.

The development of the two roads forms part of legacy projects initiated in Matabeleland South following the province’s hosting of this year’s Independence Day celebrations.

Matabeleland South Provincial Roads Engineer, Mr Mangisi Nkomo, said a total of nine contractors are working on the Bulawayo-Kezi-Maphisa Road, while four contractors have been deployed on the Gwanda-Maphisa Road project.

He said most contractors are currently focused on earthworks, with surfacing works expected to commence soon on several sections.

“We have two sections where we are doing asphalt overlaying along the Bulawayo-Kezi Road, the first one being about 26,1km coming from Bulawayo and another 16,4km section which starts from Kezi heading towards Maphisa. We also have about 63 kilometres where we are doing construction up to surfacing.

“On asphalt overlay resealing of the first section of 26,1km the contractor has covered about 12,7km. Outstanding under asphalt resealing is 13,4km. They will also do road marking and road signage. On the 16,4km over 12,3km has been done. The contractor is on site with works under progress and should be completed by next week and they will also move to road markings and signage,” said Eng Nkomo.

He said seven contractors are working on surfacing the 63km stretch along the Bulawayo-Kezi-Maphisa Road, with each contractor responsible for a nine-kilometre section.

Eng Nkomo said the various sections are at different stages of completion, with authorities targeting the surfacing of at least three kilometres per contractor in the immediate term.

The Bulawayo-Kezi-Maphisa Road and the Gwanda-Maphisa Highway are among several major road rehabilitation projects being undertaken under the Second Republic’s infrastructure modernisation programme.

The projects are expected to improve connectivity between rural and urban centres, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and enhance access to social services and economic opportunities for communities in Matabeleland South.

Road rehabilitation and upgrading remain key pillars of the Government’s infrastructure development strategy aimed at improving the country’s transport network and supporting economic growth.

President Mnangagwa has repeatedly reaffirmed the Second Republic’s commitment to developing a modern and integrated transport system capable of positioning Zimbabwe as a preferred regional logistics and trade hub.
