A MALE engagement session organised by the National AIDS Council (NAC) and key stakeholders in Zenka area, Nkayi District, attracted scores of participants on Wednesday, generating vibrant debate and renewed interest in community-driven efforts to combat HIV, non-communicable diseases and other social challenges.

The gathering brought together health professionals, social workers, traditional leaders and community members for frank discussions on the realities of HIV and AIDS, risky behaviours, and the importance of making informed decisions to safeguard health and wellbeing.

Participants deliberated on a range of issues, including unsafe sexual practices, drug and substance abuse, the importance of regular health screenings, and measures to curb the growing incidence of prostate cancer among men.

Both young and elderly men were given an opportunity to raise questions and share experiences on various health concerns.

Discussions highlighted the importance of consistent condom use, participation in sporting activities to strengthen community cohesion, and keeping young people productively engaged to steer them away from harmful behaviours.

Young men challenged their elders to lead by example and encouraged them to actively support their spouses by accompanying them to health facilities when seeking medical assistance.

Nkayi District Development Coordinator, Mr Ngema Hlambayo, spoke on the “Not in My Village” campaign, a national programme aimed at combating drug and substance abuse, child marriages, gender-based violence and unsafe sexual practices.

He urged participants to cascade the campaign to family and community levels in order to strengthen collective action against social ills.

During the discussions, elderly participants appealed for stronger Government intervention to curb the influx and distribution of illicit drugs and substances.

Some expressed concern that drug and substance abuse was increasingly affecting social relations, family stability and the wellbeing of young people in the community.

The meeting underscored the importance of stakeholder collaboration, community awareness and individual responsibility in promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing the spread of HIV and other preventable health conditions.
