the Zimbabwe Republic Police Pinnacle 1 100m at Borrowdale Racecourse on Sunday.
The chestnut runner, with Derrick David on board ,stopped the clock in 1 minute 03.85 seconds as the partnership beat Wishful Eye by 1.75lengths. Her time was, however, still short of the course record of 1 min 03.72 sec set on March 14, last year by Prussian Hero.
South African trainer Alyson Wright had saddled in Wishful Eye with jockey Corne Orffer and they had fancied their chances of winning the sprint.
There was US$5 000 in stakes with the winning combination taking home US$3 000 with second place getting US$1 000.
Coming at number seven, Control Freak always posed a real danger to the field after a 125 day-rest and it did not come as a surprise when she won the straight run.
Wishful Eye had also given a good account of herself on her local debut when she defeated Gortahawk but was on Sunday, forced to settle for second place by the Harris runner. Sonic Barrier, another runner from the Harris yard, finished 1.25 lengths behind Wishful Eye.
Quinton Riddle took control of the equine athlete that was a quarter lens ahead of Auvergne. Syracuse took fifth place with Whole Kamboole sixth and Feline Prince was last on the sprint. Before the feature race, Kirk Swanson’s Elton had cruised to a win by half a lengths in the Marange Resources Merit Handicap 1200m race seven. Orffer held the straps with Plastic Lady coming second.
In third place was Tatenda Guta and the six-year-old Destrier also from the Swanson yard.
