A convention on match-fixing and corruption in sport is scheduled for the Harare International Conference Centre tomorrow and Tuesday.
Minister of Sport and Recreation Makhosini Hlongwane who is going to officially open and close the conference said the gathering has been necessitated by the latest match-fixing shame which has rocked Zimbabwean football where players and administrators are said to have manipulated results of matches. Hlongwane explained that the meeting has been arranged to understand the scope of match-fixing and other forms of dishonesty in sport.
Invited to this meeting are stakeholders involved in sport in the country with local speakers and those from outside the country.
“We have a convention on match-fixing and corruption in sport in Harare on Monday and Tuesday, this is as a result of the recent match fixing scandal to hit Zimbabwean football. It is designed to understand fully the extent of match-fixing and other forms of cheating in sport. We are not only looking at match-fixing but we are also looking to address corruption, age cheating and doping,’’ said Hlongwane.
According to Hlongwane, guests have been invited from within and outside the country. It is aimed at coming up with a national anti-match fixing policy.
