A CONVICT from Victoria Falls was caught selling drugs to prisoners while performing community service at the court complex.
Mkhululi Nkomo (42), a builder from Mkhosana suburb, was last month sentenced to perform community service at the Victoria Falls Magistrates Court after being convicted of assault.
He took advantage of meeting inmates while performing community service to sell them mbanje. Nkomo who was left with just two days to complete the community service, was caught red-handed by a prison officer selling the mbanje leading to his arrest.
He pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of dangerous drugs when he appeared before Victoria Falls Magistrate Ms Lindiwe Maphosa.
Ms Maphosa sentenced him to 30 days imprisonment.
Prosecuting, Mr Listen Nare said last Tuesday afternoon, Nkomo was spotted by a prison officer carrying a packet containing mbanje and was immediately arrested.
Nkomo was serving a sentence for striking a colleague with a brick for failing to pay the money he owed him.
He was then sentenced to nine months in prison and three months were suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence for the next five years. The remaining six months were commuted to 210 hours of community service.
