Cook-Out competition opens markets for traditional foods

GOVERNMENT is accelerating efforts to commercialise Zimbabwe’s traditional cuisine, with the Amai Traditional Cook-Out Competition creating new business opportunities for communities.
Speaking at the Manicaland provincial event in Mutare, Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Minister Barbara Rwodzi who was represented by permanent secretary in her ministry, Dr Takaruza Munyanyiwa, said gastronomy tourism is now a key economic driver.


“The commercialisation of our food heritage is not just about preserving culture, but about owning its economic value. It has the potential to create jobs, empower communities and generate sustainable income,” she said.
She said the programme is linking local producers with hotels, restaurants and other players in the tourism sector to expand markets for traditional dishes.
Meanwhile, Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Minister Misheck Mugadza who was also represented by permanent secretary in his office, Mr Abbiott Maronge, said the initiative is critical for national development.
“This is about reclaiming our heritage and showcasing our rich culinary diversity. It is a critical step towards achieving Vision 2030,” he said.


He also said the competition continues to position traditional food as both a cultural asset and an economic opportunity.
Winners also hailed the platform for its inclusivity.
Mrs Esinah Hlabati from Nyanga, who won in the persons with disabilities category, said, “This competition has shown us that we are capable. I want to use this opportunity to build a business and teach others.”
