COOL TALK ME UP: Are you on the right path?

With Swag Mama
The first term is now coming to an end. A quarter of 2014 is gone and the year that appeared so long at the beginning now looks much shorter.  In an earlier article I talked about how everyone needs a game plan, if they are to succeed in life. Success is not an accident, but something that you must plan for.
Part of that grand scheme is to periodically look back at what you have achieved versus what you want to do.

Are you on the right path or do you need to reconsider the options? Perhaps now you have new information that has made you see things differently. This is the skill of evaluation.

Just like an end of term report tells you the places where you need to concentrate on, even in your life you need occasional reports to check if it is going the way it should.

So let’s do your end of term evaluation for life skills:
1. What did I achieve over the first three months of the year? As you answer this question you must be clear on what you set out to do in the first place. Only then can you give yourself a mark to see if you have passed or failed. Did you promise yourself that you would improve your grade in mathematics by at least 20 marks? Or is it something in your personal life that you decided to deal with? How did you do?

2. What could I have achieved? We always think that some people are just naturally lucky because good things just seem to happen to them. But succeeding in life is not about what happens to you, but rather what you do with the opportunities that come your way. Could you have joined a club that is now going places? Could you have said kind words that would have made a difference in someone’s life? Could you have done better in that subject?

3. Where am I going? Never forget your big plan, even if you must take it in steps. As I said earlier on, sometimes you need to change your goals.

Perhaps you are in Lower Sixth and you have realised that the subjects that you chose are not really what you would rather be studying. It will be hard to do it, but if you would rather study something else, the chance is still there. You could use the holidays to catch up on the new subjects. If you are still on the same path, then it is good to know that as well.

4. What is my next step? From your progress you know what you need to do now. It could be extra study in a subject, using the holidays to train on public speaking skills or whatever else that you have decided that you need to do.

So now that your life is going according to plan, enjoy the last few days of the term and look forward to an exciting holiday where you will not do anything that you might regret next term.
