A Harare traffic police officer lost part of his right ear in a fight with a kombi crew after they kidnapped him while on duty on Sunday.

Constable Shadreck Jongwe, 36, was abducted and viciously attacked by the driver and conductor of a white Toyota Hiace (AGJ 9866) after he stopped the vehicle for picking up passengers at an undesignated spot along Robert Mugabe Road.

According to police reports, Constable Jongwe and his colleague, Constable Chinhamo, were conducting routine traffic enforcement when they flagged down the kombi operated by Shepherd Kazingizi.

When Kazingizi was instructed to proceed to the Roadport parking bays to pay a fine, he instead sped off with Constable Jongwe still inside the vehicle.

On the way to Eastlea, the kombi’s conductor, Takudzwa Pachavo, 29, allegedly assaulted the officer repeatedly.

One of the assailants bit off part of Constable Jongwe’s right ear. The injured officer was later dumped along Robert Mugabe Road near Rhodesville.

He was rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital for treatment and has since been discharged.

The quick intervention of the vehicle owner, Melisa Manon’ore, led to the arrest of both Kazingizi and Pachavo, who are now in police custody.
