A policeman has been arraigned before the court on allegations of fondling and caressing the breasts of a woman who had offered him shelter for the night. The police officer, Constable Yona Banda of Mkoba Village 9, appeared before Gweru magistrate, Sithembiso Ncube recently to answer a charge of indecent assault.
Banda was not asked to plead and was remanded to April 28 on $100 bail.
Prosecutor, Daniel Tafuma, alleges that on April 3, Banda was on duty in Lower Gweru when he met the complainant, Linda Dube, a bar lady, who was on her way home from work at around midnight.
Banda then followed the complainant to her residence where he requested to be given a room to sleep claiming he was afraid to go back to work in the dead of the night.
He was given a room to sleep while the complainant shared the other room with her sister. Tafuma said the accused followed the complainant and protested that he could not sleep alone.
Banda then lifted the complainant from the room she was sharing with her sister to his room where he started to fondle the complaint’s breasts at the same time caressing her behinds.
The complainant managed to escape from Banda’s grip and locked herself in the room where her sister was sleeping.
Banda kicked the door open and started to assault the complainant with fists and booted feet.
Tafuma said Dube shouted for help prompting Banda to flee. Dube sustained a bruised face.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Banda’s arrest.
