adminA 33-YEAR-OLD police constable shot three people before turning the gun on himself at Cape Town International Airport yesterday, Western Cape police said.
Captain Frederick van Wyk said the constable arrived at the airport around 6.30PM and went to the food-court to speak to his partner at one of the restaurants.
“It is alleged that an argument ensued and he shot his partner and two other employees at the food outlet,” he said. “The man then turned the gun on himself, fatally wounding him.”
An inquest docket and attempted murder dockets were opened.
“Airports Company SA Cape Town International Airport can confirm an incident which took place at approximately 6.20PM at an eatery which led to a fatality,” Deidre Davids, a spokesperson, said in a statement.
“This is a tragic event and our condolences go out to the friends and family. We can now confirm that three other people were injured.”
The area was cordoned off and was declared a crime scene.
She said airport operations were not being affected because the shooting happened in a smaller section of the airport.
Witness William Scott, who was at the airport at the time, said: “The shooter jumped over the Ocean Basket sushi bar and chased one of the ladies working at the back. She ran through the side door, just past where I was sitting, and the man following behind her pulled out his pistol.
“He stopped her right in front of the Ocean Basket entrance when he then shot her and followed to shoot himself in the head. Before I left, the lady who was shot was still alive and was being helped by some older man.”
Another witness Kathryn Swain tweeted: “A man went into Ocean Basket at the CT airport (husband/bf) and shot his gf/wife who was working there then shot himself in the head.”-News24
