Copota School for the Blind thrills at disability expo

A musical group of pupils at Copota School for the Blind demonstrated that disability is not inability when they left delegates to the National Disability Expo at the Civic Centre in Masvingo asking for more with their polished performance.

Led by Khumbulani Mbuso, a Form 5 pupil at the special school, the pupils effortlessly churned out Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi, Jah Prayzah and Munyaradzi Munodawafa’s songs.

It was the song Tokutambirai that sent delegates haywire as Mbuso showed that his visual impairment will not stop him from displaying his talent.

He drew a huge spectacle from passersby with some thinking that it was Tuku playing.

When the group played Munodawafa’s danceable Zodzo which is a gospel piece, the open space became small as the crowd thronged the stage to dance.

Munodawafa is a former pupil at the school which is credited with building his musical career. The school also boasts of nurturing the late Paul “Dr Love” Matavire’s talent.

Obey Chiteke, a music teacher at the school said despite their physical condition, there are many gifted pupils at Copota School for the Blind saying given exposure, the students can beat most who are able-bodied.

“We have a number of pupils who can sing. This is the same school that gave Munodawafa prominence and Khumbulani has also shown interest in taking music seriously after he completes his studies. Most of the pupils are intelligent and excellent in art disciplines,” said Chiteke.
