PLUMTREE police say they are battling to identify the body of an elderly man who was stabbed and dumped in a pond.
The body was discovered on Thursday morning by Zitshe Moyo, 66, who has a nursery school close to the pond.Chief Superintendent Macdonald Samuriwo, the Officer Commanding Bulilima-Mangwe District, said investigators were still trying to identify the man, and is asking families with an elderly male relative missing to come forward.
“The man, whose particulars are not known as of now, was discovered floating in a pond which is about three metres deep. Upon examining the body, we discovered a deep cut above the left eye and a depression on the forehead which suggests that he was assaulted and stabbed before he was thrown in the pond,” Chief Supt Samuriwo said.
“The outer skin was peeling off as a result of decomposition. No identification particulars were found on him.”
The police chief said officers had canvassed surrounding areas but had come up empty.
“We would like to appeal for assistance from the public in identifying him. The man is dark in complexion and is of medium build. He was putting on a short-sleeved grey T-shirt with a blue upper half, black collar and white bands on the sleeves.
“He was also wearing a black pair of trousers and blue tennis shoes with yellow and white patches. We have not made any arrests so far but we are investigating the matter.”
