Cops arrested for assaulting motorist

Sergeant Debra Mlalazi (33), of 2725 Emakhandeni, Assistant Inspector Joseph Mpofu (38), of 14264 Pumula South and Constable Prosper Nsingo (34), of Western Commonage Police Quarters, allegedly assaulted Mr Kenroad Nelson Gangazhira (56) of Number 9 Kennilworth Avenue, North End.

He is employed by Zimplow in Bulawayo.

The three were supposed to appear before Mrs Gladmore Mushove at the Bulawayo magistrates’ court yesterday but the trial could not start because Sgt Mlalazi did not attend court.

They were all remanded out of custody on their own cognisance to 6 January 2013 for start of trial.

Allegations against Sgt Mlalazi, Asst Insp Mpofu and Cst Nsingo are that in May this year, they attended an accident at the corner of Fort Street and Leopold Takawira Avenue where Mr Gangazhira was involved in an accident.

Mr Gangazhira was taken to Drill Hall where some examinations were carried out to ascertain whether he was drunk when the accident happened.

The court heard that Mr Gangazhira was told to return the following day for further investigations and when he returned he was taken to Office 12 where he was attended to by Sgt Mlalazi.

It is alleged that a misunderstanding arose between the two and Sgt Mlalazi then took a baton and beat up Mr Gangazhira  several times all over the body.

Asst Insp Mpofu who was the officer in charge on the day allegedly joined in the assault and beat up Mr Gangazhira with the baton.

Cst Nsingo allegedly handcuffed the complainant and also started assaulting him, the court was told.

Mr Gangazhira was taken to Bulawayo Central Police Station where he was detained.

He sustained serious injuries and on his release, he went to hospital where he was treated and discharged.

Mr Jeremiah Mutsindikwa is representing the State.
