POLICE have smashed a suspected cable theft ring in Bulawayo after catching three men burning stolen copper under the cover of darkness, with one suspect arrested and two still on the run.
Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Thandekile Ndlovu said the raid was carried out in the early hours of 22 September following a surge in the vandalism of ZETDC and TelOne infrastructure across the city.
“At around 0300 hours, police raided Killarney Squatter Camp. During the process, police observed some unusual fire that was burning in a bushy area near the squatter camp and decided to check what was happening,” said Asst Ins Ndlovu.
Officers moved in and discovered three men burning armoured copper cables. They pounced, arresting Clifford Sibanda (35), while his accomplices, Nqobizitha Mathe and Mlungisi Sibanda (33), fled into the darkness.
A further search of the squatter camp uncovered more loot. “A 10-meter length of 16mm² 4-core armoured copper cable was recovered in Mlungisi Sibanda’s shack, hidden under his bed,” she said.
The total haul, including burnt and deformed cables, weighed 157.5 kilogrammes and was valued at US$3 150.
Asst Insp Ndlovu issued a stern warning to vandals and buyers of stolen copper.
“Those people who vandalise ZETDC or TelOne cables, those who think of doing so and those who are buyers should seriously consider trying other legal business avenues as the long arm of the law is now hovering over their heads,” she warned.
Asst Insp Ndlovu urged the public to assist in tracking down the two fugitives.
“We appeal to anyone with information that may lead to the arrest of the outstanding accused persons to come forward and report at any nearest police station,” said the police spokesperson.
