POLICE in Bulawayo have intensified night patrols in Cowdray Park suburb after the residential area witnessed an increase in burglaries and robberies in the last few weeks. On Friday last week, more than 60 police officers were seen patrolling the suburb and people who were acting in a suspicious manner were stopped and searched for any drugs and weapons.
Bulawayo Provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo said during the winter season, there is an increase in criminal activities in the suburb as some parts do not have electricity and criminals take advantage of the situation.
“Since the winter season began, there’s been an increase in burglary and assault reports from the residents at Luveve Police Station and to the neighbourhood watch committee,” said Insp Moyo.
“Residents who knock off late from work also fall prey to thieves who hide in the bushes and rob them of their money and cell phones.”
Insp Moyo said the patrols would continue until the suburb has been rid of criminal elements.
He urged residents to work with the police to bring all criminal elements to book.
“We want to encourage all residents to secure their property especially at night. We’re also appealing to the public to assist the police by reporting any form of crime and reporting on suspicious persons,’ he added.
“Residents should WhatsApp 0776097122 or call on our hotline number 09885479; toll-free number Net One number 110 to report any matter.
“It’s our constitutional mandate to make sure residents are protected and live in a safe environment. With the cooperation of residents, there’ll be a definite decrease in criminal activities.”
