Decomposing bodies of two men have been found floating in the Zambezi river. A villager discovered the bodies while fishing in the Jambezi area. The Officer Commanding Victoria Falls, Chief Superintendent Jairos Chiwona, said Khawulani Nyathi of Jambezi, who was fishing at Njobeni fishing area on February 14, saw the bodies floating at around 4PM.
“Villagers failed to identify the bodies and they were conveyed to Victoria Falls Hospital for postmortem. We’re appealing to communities who have missing relatives to come forward and identify the bodies.
“Investigations are still underway and we’ve since engaged our Zambian counterparts in trying to identify the deceased persons,” said Chief Supt Chiwona.
There were no identification particulars found on the bodies.
Chief Shana, who has jurisdiction over the area, said:
“Noone is missing from our village and we’ve tried to inquire from the neighbouring villages. Villagers suspect these people could be Zambian rustlers. There was an incident where cattle rustlers were seen and villagers apprehended one and two escaped.
“Villagers suspect these two could be the escaped cattle thieves. Maybe they drowned as they tried to cross back to their country,” he said.
Sources say a Zambian family that has been to Victoria Falls to identify the bodies said the didn’t know the dead men.
