CORRUPTION prevention studies are set to be incorporated into the primary and secondary schools’ curriculum starting next year under an initiative meant to foster ethical principles and integrity among young Zimbabweans.
This was revealed in the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) 2023 Annual Report, which states that research into the initiative has been ongoing since 2020.
The anti-graft body undertook research in five provinces, with the goal of incorporating anti-corruption content into the curriculum, from early childhood development (ECD) up to Advanced Level.
“ZACC produced a report which was submitted to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education experts at the Curriculum Development and Technical Services department,” reads the report.
“ZACC has also participated in several curriculum review meetings.
“The curriculum review process is still ongoing, and the commission is envisaging that by the year 2025, anti-corruption content will be included in the education curriculum.”
The commission cited the success of similar programmes in Asian countries like Hong Kong, Malaysia and South Korea.
“Since 2020, the commission has been pursuing mainstreaming anti-corruption content into the school curriculum,” the report continues.
“This strategy was learnt through best practices from countries that are successful in fighting corruption.
“The concept of catching them young has worked in jurisdictions such as Hong Kong, Malaysia, (and) South Korea . . .
“The commission has observed that the focus in schools has been mainly on skills development and has overlooked issues of ethics, which are important in raising ethical individuals who will be
the future workforce of the public service.
“Working with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, the commission conducted consultations in five provinces, namely Mashonaland Central, Masvingo, Matabeleland South, Bulawayo and Matabeleland North.”
The consultations entailed soliciting views from stakeholders, including parents, teachers and learners.
