A family of five in Zimbabwe required as much as $3,398 for food alone for it not to be considered as poor during the month of May 2020, latest figures from Zimstat show.
According to Zimstat, the Food Poverty Line (FPL) for one person in May 2020 was $680.00 while that for an average household of five persons was $3,398.00.
However, for it not to be considered poor, a household of five required as much as $8,484 to stay above the poverty datum line.
Zimstat said the Total Consumption Poverty Line (TCPL) for one person during the same period (May 2020) stood at $1,697.00 while that for an average of five persons per household was $8,484.00.
The latest TCPL figures come at a time the country has been experiencing rampant price increases that saw inflation soaring to record levels last seen during prior to 2009.
Inflation for the month of May 2020 stood at 786 percent, eroding wages and salaries for most employees.
This forced Government to award its employees US dollar allowances amounting to US$75 per month for the next three months.
The workers were also awarded a 50 percent salary increment with promises to continue with negotiations for better wages and salaries.
