THE consumer basket for a family of six marginally decreased by 0,29 percent from the January 2014 figure of $561,56 to $559,93 in February, the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) said yesterday.In a statement, CCZ said the food basket increased by 0,13 percent last month while detergents recorded a decrease.
“The food basket increased by 0,13 percent from $150,33 by January 2014 to $150,52 by the end of February 2014 while detergents decreased by 14,88 percent from $12,23 to $10,41 as a result of supermarket promotions on most products like washing powder (Sunlight) which was on promotion in all OK supermarkets,” it said.
Margarine, tomatoes, rice, onions and beef recorded an increase in prices.
“Margarine increased by 34 cents from $2,05 to $2,39, tomatoes by 23 cents from 75 cents to 98 cents, rice by 6 cents from $1,59 to $1,65, onions by 15 cents from 80 cents to 95 cents and meat (beef) by 10 cents from $3,90 to $4,00”.
The consumer lobby group also noted a decrease in prices of washing powder, cooking oil, cabbage, laundry bars and mealie-meal, among other commodities.
The price of washing powder went down by 50 cents from $1,45 to $0,95, cooking oil by 25 cents from $1,80 to $1,55, cabbage by 8 cents from 69 cents to 61 cents, laundry bars by 7 cents from $1,17 to $1,10, mealie-meal by 5 cents from $12,30 to $12,25, fresh milk by 4 cents from 74 cents to 70 cents, salt by 3 cents from 23 cents to 20 cents and bath soap by 1 cent from 80 cents to 79 cents.
“The prices of other basic commodities that include fuel, tea leaves, bread and flour, remained unchanged from the January 2014 figures”.
