Cost of living down 0,72pc

in January this year, reflecting a 0,72 percent decline.
The food basket decreased by US$5,55 from US$160,98 in December to US$155,43 the following month.

According to CCZ, the decrease in the consumer basket was a result of the stability of prices witnessed in January due to competitiveness of products on the market and dampened consumer demand.

Soaps and detergents reflected a 11,56 percent increase from US$12,02 in December to US$13,41 last month.

The price of roller meal went up by US$1, 58 from US$10, 38 in December to US$11,96 the following month, exacerbated by the increase in prices by millers from US$5,00 to US$5,44 per 10kg.

CCZ noted that the price of margarine went down by US$0,25 from US$2,30 to US$2,05 in January.
The biggest decrease was recorded in prices of meat which came down by 60 cents from US$5,70 in December to US$5,07 last month.

It was noted that the prices of other basic commodities, including bread, sugar, cooking oil and bath soap did not change from the December figures.

CCZ urged consumers to shop wisely and buy certified products provided with vital information, such as the manufacture and expiry dates.
