In a statement, CCZ executive director Ms Rosemary Siyachitema said the food basket increased from $143,94 to $145,72, reflecting a 1,24 percent increase.
“The food basket increased by 1,24 percent from $143,94 in July to $145,72 in August though soaps and detergents remained unchanged from their July figures of $13,53.”
The CCZ said the prices of the following items had increased: margarine by 9c to $2,19 , rice by 5c to $1,85, tomatoes by 35c to 90c, onions by 4c from 99c, cabbage to 60c from 55c and meat by 3c from $3,92 to $3,95.
The prices of most basic commodities such as mealie-meal, salt, sugar, laundry bars, among others remained unchanged.
Bread also remained at the same price in spite of the Bakers Association of Zimbabwe lobbying for an increase in its price, which the CCZ feels was unnecessary.
Ms Siyachitema said they always encouraged consumers to shop conscientiously and to take comfort in buying certified products.
“Consumers are encouraged to shop conscientiously and take comfort in buying certified products. Where products are not certified, they should carefully examine the information provided such as the manufacturing and expiry dates,” she said.
