BULAWAYO Mayor Councillor Martin Moyo has called on residents to pay water bills on time to enable the local authority to continue offering essential services.Addressing journalists and other stakeholders at the Bulawayo Press Club on Thursday evening, Clr Moyo said the success of council was dependent on the support it got from its residents.

“The city is as rich as its people. If residents do not pay bills and rates it will be difficult for the council to provide meaningful services,” said Clr Moyo.

He said the recent rescheduling of the water shedding timetable from 72 hours to 48 hours per week was a difficult task, which council made after wide consultations with stakeholders.

The review of water shedding was effected following improvement in the pumping of water from Mtshabezi Dam after the intervention of the Minister of Environment, Water and Climate, Cde Saviour Kasukuwere who ordered the 24 hours of pumping from the dam.

The move was welcomed by residents. Clr Moyo said councillors were yet to meet to deliberate on the numerous projects they would undertake during their term of office.

He said most of the council programmes will commence after the induction exercise, which started on Wednesday and ended yesterday.
Turning to rehabilitation of roads, Clr Moyo said the priority would be given to roads such a Sizinda, Nketa and Airport road.

“The city is as rich as its people. If residents do not pay bills and rates it will be difficult for the council to provide meaningful services.”
