GOKWE Town Council has availed 100 low-density stands in Kambasha suburb as it moves to reduce its housing backlog that stands at about 1 000.
In an interview, the council’s secretary, Ms Melania Mandeya, said the local authority was vetting land for additional stands as over 800 potential home owners had applied with only 100 applicants getting a stand each in the low density area.
‘’We have availed 100 residential stands in the low density suburb of Kambasha and the response has been overwhelming. Over 800 people applied and only 100 met the requirements and have been allocated the stands,” said Ms Mandeya.
She said the stands are between 1 000 m2 and 1 200 m2 and cost around $4 300, which would go towards administration and maintenance costs.
Ms Mandeya said the local authority was also working on a housing scheme targeting low income earners. She said stands under that scheme would cost around $2 000, payable over a certain period of time.
