Council cashier jailed for theft

Concillia Madzamba (25) of Mkoba Village 15 who was employed as a cashier in the Revenue            Department of the Gweru City Council had pleaded not guilty to 68 counts of theft when she appeared before Gweru magistrate, Mrs Kuda Canady.

Madzamba was however convicted as a result of overwhelming evidence against her.

She was sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Two years were suspended on condition of good behaviour while four years were suspended on condition that she pays restitution $37 168 to her former employers.

For the State, Mr Bonwell Balamanja said on a period extending from 11 June to 19 November, 2009, Madzamba received money from clients on behalf of the council.

He said Madzamba was to bank the money at FBC bank, Gweru branch.

Mr Balamanja said on 66 occasions, Madzamba received money from clients which she failed to bank and converted it to her own use.

The matter came to light when Madzamba’s immediate supervisor, Ms Mercy Saungwane, a senior accountant, was going through returns sent to her by Madzamba.

Ms Saungwane reported the matter to the city council’s audit department which in turn instituted investigations leading to her arrest.

The council was prejudiced of $37 168 and nothing was recovered.
