Gweru Deputy Mayor Councillor Taurai Demo said Unki Mines extended the gesture of $90 000 after taking note of the city’s perennial water woes.
The majority of the company’s employees stay in Gweru.
Clr Demo said the sinking of boreholes has since started in different suburbs. “The sinking of boreholes will come as a temporary measure to ease water problems in the city. Council has already drilled boreholes through funding from other donors and the funding by Unki
Mines will help council drill more boreholes so that residents access safe water,” he said.
Gweru residents have been enduring perennial water problems that continue to haunt them as the city fathers failed to address the challenge over the years.
Gweru Mayor Clr Tedious Chimombe told Chronicle last week that the water problems, which continue to give residents sleepless nights, were as a result of old water pumps at the city’s major supply dam, Gwenoro.
He indicated then that only two pumps instead of six were pumping water at the Gwenoro Dam. During the 2012 budget, the Gweru Council proposed that residents pay a one-off $20 per household, which would go towards the purchase of water pumps.
