Council loses US$100 000 to meter reader

(45) of Hatcliffe yesterday appeared in court facing charges of theft of trust property.
Magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei did not ask Ranga to plead and granted him US$300 bail coupled with stringent conditions.
As part of his bail conditions, Ranga was ordered to surrender title deeds to his house, report to the police once a week and not to interfere with witnesses.

He will be back in court for routine remand on October 10.
Prosecutor Ms Svodai Kadivirire alleged that from December last year to September this year, Ranga was assigned by his superiors to withdraw money that would be used as petty cash from the council account.

Ranga would enter less money in the cashbook per every withdrawal before converting the balance to his own use.
Sometimes he would not even record the money into the cashbook, the court heard.
An internal audit unearthed the offence and a police report was made leading to Ranga’s arrest.
