HARARE City Council has lost more than US$2 million in the past two years through paying double salaries for one role.
Speaking during a Council meeting, Human Resources Committee chairperson, Kudzai Kadzombe, said Council was paying employees on suspension, as well as those acting in their positions.
“For the past two-and-half years, we have used over US$2 million paying those on suspension sitting at home and paying those who are acting in those positions.
“We are having a challenge as a Council of wasting resources and paying employees that are on suspension.
“Our current employees are earning peanuts, as we have not managed to pay them the money we were supposed to pay. Last month, we gave our employees US$25, yet we have an extra bill of paying executives,” she said.
She said the Council was set to conduct job evaluations to ensure that they were able to provide residents with efficient services.
“We have a lot of duplication of duties and roles.
“Some positions in our organogram are supposed to be redundant, while we should add some.
“We noticed that there was a gap in terms of our structure and service delivery on the ground. Our employees are disgruntled by the salaries we have been paying them.
“They also deserve a decent living wage,” she said.
