Gweru City Council and Midlands State University last week conducted awareness campaigns to help in the fight against the spread of typhoid and cholera.
The awareness campaign with was started at Batanai Campus saw high-ranked Gweru City Council officials who include the city`s deputy mayor Councillor Cleopas Shiri and the health director Mr Sam Sekenhamo join MSU students in a march and around the high density suburbs of Senga and Nehosho.
In a speech after the awareness campaign, Gweru deputy mayor Cllr Cleopas Shiri said they had partnered MSU as they plan to educate the students and community on how they can fight the spread of disease like cholera and typhoid.
Cllr Shiri said: ‘’We have partnered with MSU because the university’s students are part of to the population of the city so we wanted to educate society on how they can prevent the spreading typhoid and cholera in the community.”
Cllr Shiri said council is willing to work with all stake holders in the fight against the spread of cholera and typhoid and also clarified that they were willing to engage food vendors.
‘‘As council we are willing to engage vendors who can approach us as we are willing to designate market places that they can use for their business,” he said.
Mr Sekenhamo also echoed Cllr Shiri’s remarks of educating the society on how they can prevent diseases like typhoid and cholera.
‘‘We have engaged MSU whose students contribute to the population of this city as we want to teach them how to fight diseases like cholera and typhoid,” he said.
