Council mulls parking bays for disabled people

HARARE Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume has urged City Parking to mark certain bays for the disabled, even if they have to pay.

He also called for similar bays at council premises dedicated exclusively to the disabled.

In communications to the mayor at a full council meeting last week, Clr Mafume said he received a letter of complaint from Mr Walter Kawara pertaining to the shortage of parking bays for the disabled in the CBD.

“This man uses crutches and parked so far away. He was thoroughly harassed by our parking attendants, so much so that he felt compelled to sit here for one hour waiting to have an audience with me,” he said.

“And I could feel the exasperation in his voice at our collective insensitivities,” he said.

“I think if you move to other societies, there are bays dedicated to the disabled, even if they are paid. Here, there are no bays that are marked for the disabled starting from the city council. So I think City Parking should be directed to demarcate certain bays to be marked for the disabled so that the disabled are the ones who park at bays closest to the entrance of business premises that are strategically located. So I promised Mr Walter Kawara that our council will look into that.”
