HARARE Mayor Councillor Jacob Mafume has called for a sustainable alternative to the Glen View borehole which was declared illegal or have another one drilled to ensure residents continue having water.

This follows a petition that the mayor received from Glen View residents on the removal of a borehole in Glen View by the council, citing that it was illegal.

It is alleged that the council wants to create four infill residential stands where the borehole is cited.

In communications to the mayor at a full council meeting last week, Cllr Mafume said if the borehole is being used and people are drinking water from it, the council must allow them to keep drawing water from it until such time they give them an alternative.

“If we get caught in legal necessities, we might run into problems with the people,” the mayor said.

“So let’s look into that, that borehole, please don’t take away the borehole from the people without alternatives.

“Let’s have a cogent alternative or let’s drill another one near to that place or make sure that we provide them with water. I think the fear is that you remove the borehole and they will be left without any water.”
