RETIRED Municipality of Chinhoyi employees have claimed the local authority is neglecting their welfare and many of them are wallowing in poverty despite having contributed significant amounts in pension funds.

Some of the pensioners, who were retired in 2012, have told H- Metro the local authority reneged on its promises.

“I don’t have anything to show for it. I am living in abject poverty. I got nothing from the council. I am yet to be paid my pension.

“All the years I worked there have brought nothing to my family, except all this suffering.

“We were promised some gratuities, but we are still chasing the wind.

“It is very sad that our local authority is neglecting us.”

Another former employee said:

“I contributed to a pension fund and yet nothing has been paid to me. Council loved us while we were still in employment and they no longer care about us.”

Another ex-employee said managers, who retired, were paid their pensions.

“What pains me most is that former management employees, who went on retirement, were paid a huge golden handshake while they have not even given us some peanuts.”

Council spokesman, Tichaona Mlauzi, told H- Metro:

“As you might be aware, our employees contribute to some pension fund.

“What we do is that upon retirement, they are supposed to get their payments through the pensions fund.

“However, as a council,  we decided to give our workers a gratuity for the years served at the establishment.

“It’s coming in late, but we are trying by all means to ensure that besides their pension contributions, which is paid by pension houses, we also show our gratitude by paying the gratuity for the number of years.”
