City Parking (Pvt) Ltd marshals will this weekend take over operations at Mbare terminus for Mutare and Masvingo-bound buses after the Harare City Council withdrew municipal workers who were stationed there for alleged corruption. Harare councillors last year tasked the city to investigate corruption amid indications that fake receipt books were being used, thereby prejudicing the municipality of thousands of US dollars in potential revenue.
“Staff at Mbare Musika are being transferred to other departments including municipal police over corruption. A team comprising members from different departments was deployed at the bus terminus to monitor payment for the use of the terminus,” said an official who declined to be named.
City Parking is a subsidiary of Harare City Council, created to run the municipality’s parking business while waiting for finalisation of the dispute between Harare and Easihold (Pvt) Limited of South Africa, who were running Easipark.
City Parking (Pvt) Ltd will soon clamp unlawfully parked vehicles on Harare’s streets. Owners will be have to pay US$57 for private cars and US$80 for public transport vehicles to have them released.
